OUTREACH

Production of the Friends of the Kern River Preserve newsletter in 1997 - 2011.

Participation in Giant Sequoia National Monument marketing plan.

Participation in Hwy 178 Corridor tourism committee.

Support of the Lake Isabella Chamber of Commerce's Gateway Visitor Center & Wetlands Project in 1999/2002

Leadership of dozens of 1-5 day field trips to the Kern Valley in 1999 - 2011.

Riparian habitat values education outreach to Kelso Creek landowners in 2000.

Outreach at meetings, festivals, and conferences all over California in 1999 - 2012.

Local cooperative efforts with, among others, the U.S. Forest Service, California Department of Fish & Game,  Bureau of Land Management, Wildlife Conservation Board, Natural Resource Conservation Service, Kern River Valley Revitalization Committee, Kern River Fish Hatchery, Kern Valley Historical Museum, Kern Valley Visitor's  Council, Kernville Chamber of Commerce, several Kern Valley businesses, and individuals in 1999 - 2012.

Hosting of a M.A.P.S. (Monitoring Avian Productivity and Survivorship) bird banding station, part of a nationwide network of over 400 M.A.P.S. stations, May, June, July, 1999 - 2011;

Hosting of a M.A.W.S. (Monitoring Avian Winter Survivorship) bird banding station, 2004 - 2009;

Hosting of major bird research projects May-September, 1999 - 2012.

Coordination of NABA - North Fork Kern Butterfly Counts, spring and summer 2002-2011.

Completion of the South Fork Kern Rapid Assessment Summer Bird Count in July, 1999 - 2005, 2008-2009.

Hosting of a major University of Arizona hydrological research study in 1999 & 2000.

Funding of Cal-Poly Pomona's "A Vision for the Kern River Valley Watershed" environmental and economic sustainability project December, 1999 - June, 2000.

Tricolored Blackbird habitat enhancement program. 2010-12.

Sprague Ranch restoration program 2006-2012.

KRP's native grass restoration program January, February, March, April, 1999 & 2000.

Non-native tree removal and clean-up at the Kelso Creek Sanctuary in October, 1999 & 2000.

Native grass restoration controlled burn in December, 1999.

SANCTUARIES

Acquisition of 602 acres along the Kelso Creek in December 2009. The property is being transferred to the BLM for inclusion in the Bright Star Wilderness.

Acquisition of 106 acres along the South Fork Kern in August & November 2009. The Alexander/Vig/Heflin Ranch adds important riverfront property.

Acquisition of 1,666 acres in Cyrus Canyon in August 2006. The property was transferred to the Bureau of Land Management for perpetual management.

Acquisition of 105 acres along the South Fork Kern in January 2006. The Alexander Ranch adds important riverfront property.

Acquisition of 4,400 acres along the South Fork Kern in April 2005. The Sprague Ranch property is owned in part by Audubon and the California Department of Fish & Game.

Cooperative management including fencing of Kelso Creek Sanctuary and adjacent U.S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Land Management (BLM), lands 2000-2005.

Acquisition of the 156-acre Kelso Creek Sanctuary in May, 1999.
