Audubon Kern Valley Restoration Projects

Bartolas Restoration

With a view of Bartolas Country on the Kern Plateau, this site along Fay Ranch Road was planted in the spring of 2002 by Audubon staff and volunteers. A mixture of vegetation types were simultaneously planted on this 20-acre irrigated pasture just north of the natural channel of the South Fork Kern River. Plantings included bunch grasses, saltbush, cottonwood, ash, willows, wild rose and mulefat. This is the site of one of the Kern River Preserve's most spectacular fall color displays around November each year. It hosts an abundance of wildlife attracted to the young growth. See the bottom photo for a mule deer browsing the lower branches of the cottonwood. Apparently we have our own natural army of landscapers conducting pruning exercises each year.
